Interview with Rivothrill 2018

1. Who are the members of Rivothrill?

Rivothrill: Daryl Villanueva – Vox, Paolo Balagapo – Guitars, Jeff Mendonez – Bass, Randyl Manglicmot – Drums.

2. Correct me if I'm wrong. Rivotril is used for treatment for seizures, panic disorder, and anxiety based from what I read.

Is there any relevance from the drug and why you ended up naming the band Rivothrill?

Rivothrill: Yes, Rivotril is treatment for epilepsy in infants, children and adults. We just added “H”. It’s the idea of Daryl to name the band Rivothrill. He experienced the med Rivotril and he cannot forget that because a lot of bullshit happens when he was under the influence of that med. and there’s no relevance actually.

3. Could you tell us a bit of information and history of Rivothrill? How did everyone from the band started this and that?

Rivothrill: Rivotrhrill is a sludge metal band consists with members from Las Pinas and Makati. Members are Daryl Villanueva (Vocalist), Paolo Balagapo (Guitars), Jeff Mendonez (Bass) and Randyl Maglicmot (Drums). The band creates its own unique brand of sludge incorporated blues, punk, hardcore style. Well it all started when we are always drunk. Peace! It was the idea of the vocalist (Daryl Villanueva) and former drummer (Neil Rusiana). They are planning to create a band and go slow. One time the drummer (Neil Rusiana) just referred a cute blues guitarist (Paolo Balagapo) and  salad boy hangover bassist (Jeff Mendonez). We just got drunk and jamming in. But later then the drummer (Neil Rusiana) quit the band due to his new job. So then we already have our first and second composition that time. So the vocalist continued to look for a new drummer. Then we met the blasting stoned drummer (Randyl Maglicmot), former drummer of “Down from the wound” band which is a close friend of Vocalist (Daryl Villanueva) as well. And then the cutest jam ever happened!

4. I do have the demo cd of Rivo. What topics or lyrics do you tackle on each song?

Rivothrill: For the first track “Pills Kills” this song is all about being stoned and second track “Chemical Halitosis” is for the people who uses or likes meth and crystals.

5. What is most important for Rivothrill, music or lyrics? Do the lyrics comes before or after the music is written?

Rivothrill: Well both are important. Mostly we start a song by going through the music first. Sometimes Daryl has already have the lyrics and we just jammed on a studio. We want the audience to connect with us. We want them to understand the lyrics of the song with the groove.

6. Can you name some of Rivothrills strongest musical and non-musical influences?

Rivothrill: Sludge, Doom metal, Blues and movies.

7. Anyone from the band smokes pot? If yes, does it take away any from each of the member's ability to play music or vice versa?

Rivothrill: Yes! Hahaha! It helps us to express ourselves but we are not stoned all the time, and alcohol really helps us a lot. Well actually, Randyl and Paolo do not smoke, they are more on booze and getting drunk.

 

 

8. Who writes the lyrics and where does the lyricist get the ideas and inspirations?

Rivothrill: Daryl is the one who writes the lyrics. Mostly its about the downs of life, personal struggles, fantasies and how beautiful bullshit life is.

 

9. After seeing you live and listening to the demo, I pretty much assumed you are influenced by bands like Eyehategod and Down. Is that a yes? If no, probably I need some fucking ear wax cleaning hahaha!

Rivothrill: Yes, exactly! Our influences!

10. What keeps the band motivated to make such abrasive, harsh and groovy music?

Rivothrill: We are motivated by great friends and family. We feel like there is so much happiness more like family and united by one whenever we play this music. It feels home and we enjoy it a lot.

 

11. What is Rivothrills typical gig scenery and atmosphere?

Rivothrill: As of now we only played two shows the Burning water and  HOHOL: Zine Edition. The atmosphere were good! Some of the audience appreciate us. Of course getting Drunk and going slow.. haha!

 

12. When you guys started out as Rivothrill, what was it like the first ever time you took the stage? 

Rivothrill: Our first gig was on The Art of Burning Water. The place was sick! We love the fucking venue. Actually we felt nervous and weird at first, but after we got drunk, we lost our souls!

 

13. I believe Randyl played drums from Down From The Wound. Aside from him, are the other members have any current or previous band affiliations?

Rivothrill: Yes Randyl played drums for Down from the Wound. Daryl is from a doom band named Windfall, Jeff and Paolo from a hardcore band Closefist.

 

14.  Is there something else you guys really like or fond doing aside from playing metal music? Like Hobbies? Sports? Porn?

Rivothrill: Getting drunk and porn? Haha!

 

15. Where and when was the best show Rivo ever performed at and why?

Rivothrill: Burning Water. it’s an honor to play with such great bands like Surrogate Prey, Death After Birth, Shaman’s Bud, Eyes of Fire, Tsimpayne, Malicious Birth and other sludge metal bands like it was gathering party. We felt United by that time.

 

16. What makes Rivothrill different from other sludge counterpart like Malicious Birth and Surrogate Prey?       

Rivothrill: A little bit of aggressive. Like the song song called Aggression Depression. We play more like groovy blues and cute tone but of course thanks to Malicious Birth and Surrogate Prey for inspiring us to make a good music.

 

17. Rivo's full-length has been released. What are the positive and negative responses you've gotten so far? 

Rivothrill: Positive yes but we are waiting for negative response. Hehe But it doesn't really matter. Either positive or negative as long as we are enjoying this music.

 

18. What will it make you feel if someone approaches you from a show handing over a pirated Rivothrill cd and asking for an autograph?

Rivothrill: We will still give want he want. It’s still a Rivo music. Maybe he doesn’t have money to buy the original cd. But when we see someone selling pirated Rivo cd's, that’s the time they pissed us off.
