Interview with Stefan of Rotten Cold

STEFAN OF ROTTEN COLD FROM AUSTRIA

Interviewed by: Corix

NB: -What’s up, Rotten Cold? How’s your band doin’?
ROTTENCOLD [STEFAN]: -Hi Corix! First of all, thanks for your interest in doing an interview with us. At the moment we are writing new songs for our next output (a full-length). Beside that the Rotten Cold/Human Mastication Split-CD is out now on Reverb Productions since July.

NB: -Tell us anything about your current releases? I guess it has a lot of good and positive feedback ‘cuz me personally loves it.
STEFAN: -Thanks for your compliments. Always great to get some good feeback! I hope that the feedback for the Split-CD with Human Mastication will be as good as for the Rotten Cold/Monolith Split, which came out last year.
Beside the Rotten Cold/Human Mastication Split-CD we will also do a Live Split tape with Demisor (NoiseAttack Records). And of course there´s a lot of compilation appearances going on in the next time. So, we are busy, hehe. More infos : www.rottencold.com

NB: -Could you pls. tell us how the band formed So that the whole world will know? And how’s the band Devastation? Is it still existing?.
STEFAN: -Devastation was formed by our guitar player Dave, our ex - singer Christian and me in 1998. In 1999 we found a drummer, played some shows in Austria and recorded one Demo-Cdr. Nothing more to say about that. As we wasn´t satisfied with the drumming style of of our former drummer (he couldn´t play blast beats), we threw him out of the band and invited Mango to come in the band. This was in January 2000. Since then Rotten Cold exists. In August this year we had some intern problems, so our former singer Christian had to leave the band. Our new singer is called Polsi and he is also singing in the death/grind band Decomposed Cranium. He does a really good job!

NB: -Who and what inspires you in writing songs from the cd “ Anthems of a collapsing new world order”?
STEFAN: -Dave (guit.) usually writes our music. I think he is mainly inspired by some Death Metal/Thrash/Grindcore bands from the 80´s/90´s. But there are also some riffs and even one song from me (Comfortably numb –only the music). I´m also also mainly inspired by some great Earache bands from the early 90´s such as Brutal Truth or Napalm Death. From the “newer” grindcore bands I really enjoy Nasum a lot. But I don´t limit myself listening just to one music style. I also really like bands such as Neurosis, Isis, Switchblade, Goodspeed you! Black emperor, bug (there are from Austria – check them out!), Zeni Geva and a whole lot more. So, I guess we have a wide range of influences and most of them inspires us in writing our music.

NB: -In your cd “anthems for a collapsing new world order” I feel some groovy riffs in your song “comfortably numb”, but I sense brutality in it, how would you really describe your music in this cd?
STEFAN: -The songs on the “anthems for a collapsing new world order” are our most powerful and most brutal songs we´ve ever made. The atmosphere is really dark.

NB: -Mostly grindcore bands deals with their lyrics about horror, porn and other shit like that, why mostly of your lyrics deals politically? How much you hate your government? And what can you say about your country? Is it nice to live there?
STEFAN: -Why should we deal with senseless topics such as horror, porn ... when there are so many problems on this world?? For me personally it´s important to play in a band, where the lyrics have to say something. I was never a fan of horror, splatter movies (and also the other guys in the band not that much), so it was clear from the beginning in which direction our lyrics will go. Yes, it´s really nice to live in Austria.

NB: -You guys don’t deal with porn shit lyricly and stuff like that, are you guys aware about sexism? What can you say about those sexist metal bands that deals about machoism and think they are a man that should rule and woman is just a woman?
STEFAN: -I´m total against this sexist macho crap. It seems that a lot of people, who are playing in such bands don´t know what to sing about and so they choose this lyrical way. But it´s your own decision if you listen to these bands or not – I don´t do it.

NB: -My country Philippines is the worlds fucked up and corrupt country, how would you rate your country about corruption?
STEFAN: -I´m sure that corruption also exists in Austria.

NB: -How about the u.g scene in your country? Could you pls. tell us a brief scene report so that we could have some info about your country’s u.g scene?
STEFAN: -The ug. scene in our area is really good. In August we organized a small 2-day-festival in our hometown Wolfsberg and there played 10 Bands (most of them from our area). We´ve also made an extra website for this festival: http://www.hoowah.tk/. Some bands which you should check out are: Decomposed Cranium (death/grind), Exterior (death metal), Abyss of doom (a really young, but very talented band), Pain Bullets (thrash metal), Disastrous Murmur (death metal), Mastic Scum (grindcore), bug (noiserock), Khagan (thrash metal)....and many more. If you want to get their website addresses, just drop me a line.

NB: -Who are the bands that you looked-up and respected for in your local scene?
STEFAN: -As I´ve mentioned there are some good bands in our local area. We respect most of them, but we don´t look up to them or so.

NB: -You have already played with big bands like Dying fetus and Cryptopsy, do you prefer playing in big concert and big crowd with big bands? How about playing in d.i.y gigs? Which would you prefer?
STEFAN: -I really like both, but it´s definitely better to play in front of 50-100 people that really love your music than in playing of 500 who are just waiting for the set of the next trendy band.

NB: -Is there unity of punk, hardcore and metal in your country or in your city? Do you played with anarcho punx and hardcore bands on gigs?
STEFAN: -Yes, we usually play gigs with punk, hardcore bands. The scenes (metal, hardore, punk) aren´t very united in Austria, but I think it´s going to be better from time to time. Hopefully!

NB: -You have upcoming split-cd with my Filipino brothers HumanMastication? How’s working with them? Is there any plan touring in the Philippines? I would love to see you playin’ live here, man!
STEFAN: -The collaboration with the Human Mastication guys was very nice and interesting. I think they are really cool people. Thanks to Gee and his boys! Touring in South East Asia would be fantastic and maybe we can arrange it in the next 4-5 years. The only problem is the money. A flight ticket to Manila is not really cheap.

NB: -Do you guys drink alcohol? How often? How about drugs?
STEFAN: -Yes, we all drink alcohol and our guitar player smokes a lot of marijuana. No hard drugs!

NB: -What are those recent stuffs that you’ve enjoyed rightnow? Could you pls. share it? And how about listening emo stuffs and love songs? Do you dig that shit?
STEFAN: -Bands & musicians that I really like are: Neurosis, Nasum, Isis, Godspeed you! Black emperor, Steve von Till, böhse onkelz, Brutal Truth, Godflesh, Today is the day, Morbid Angel, Killing Joke , Zeni Geva, Dead Kennedys, Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, and a lot more.....
I´m not really familiar with these new emo bands, so it´s hard to make up my mind. Some love songs are cool.

NB: -What is your views about religion? Why grindcore or metal don’t mixed up with religion?
STEFAN: -My views about religion... that´s a hard question. I think that it´s necessary to respect someone who believes in a god or not. A big problem is that religions too often preach their ideals to nearly everyone and want others to join their religion. I have no idea why not so many bands deal with religious topics.

NB: -Do you hail Satan or God?
STEFAN: -I´m a member of the Catholic Church, but I don´t practise my religion too seriously.

NB: -For you, who is the most powerful? God, Satan, or Money? pls. explain, why?
STEFAN: -The most powerful is definitely the money! It seems that nearly all in this world works with money and this is very sad! Money plays a too big role on everything in our daily life.

NB: -Alright, the last and fucked up thing is the last part of the interview, so, I would like to thank you so much for your patience answering my shits, big shout and big propz to all y’all you can now promote your band, do some blastbeat shout outs and say whatever you wanna say.
STEFAN: -Thank you Corix for your interesting questions and your possibility to appear in your webzine! Sorry that it took so long to answer it! Those who are interested in our sound, should check out our website at www.rottencold.com
