Interview with Dimentianon / Paragon Records

DIMENTIANON/PARAGON RECORDS

Interviewed by Corix Baluca

Interview with Dominus [Dimentianon guitarist / co-owner of Paragon records

Hails Dominus! Listening to Dimentianon 2005 promo makes me do this interview, or should I say, I love your music, what inspires you guys in mixing death/black/doom? Or how did it come up with this idea? Because in “Seven Suicides” there’s no mixture of Doom, is it because J. Fogarazzo of Rigor Sardonicous [a doom/death band] plays guitar on Dimentianon?

Hailz Corix, Well first of, thanks for the kind words & the interview. As to the mixture of doom within the band, I feel that we had that mixture also on “7 Suicides”. Just check out “Soulless Extinction”. We all like doom as well as death/black metal. We all have many influences within our music.

If you still remember, how old are you when you first discover black metal music? What kind of metal music you are into before you discover black metal? Do you have any non metal music you like?

I grew up on music that ranged from classic rock, to classical, to early metal. I first got into Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Styx, and Kiss. Then, classical music like Mozart, Beethoven, Pacho Bell. Then, metal took over. Iron Maiden, Dio, Savatage, King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, Slayer, Metallica, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Darkthrone, Beherit, Samael, Tiamat, My Dying Bride, Ect…. As to non-metal music, I Like Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, Ulver, Anti-matter and many others.

Do you have any band before Dimentianon? Is it still active? Inactive? How did you get involve in the underground metal, anyway?

I played in “The Forgotten” for the demo “To Walk the Forest Black”, after which I Left while they did the “L’aldila” CD. I went on to pursue technical death metal in a band called “Genissiah” for about 2 years before re-joining the band during the writing of “7 Suicides”. At that time “The Forgotten” changed its name to “Dimentianon”.

When did you start playing guitar? And who is your guitar hero? May I know what kind of guitar and effects you are using right now?

I started playing the Guitar about 9 years ago. Some of my favorite guitarists are: Tony Iommi, Kerry King & Jeff Hammerman from Slayer, Trey from Morbid Angel, Peter Gilmore from Pink Floyd. But probably the most underrated guitar player that I ever heard is Chris Oliva from Savatage. Asa to my guitars I play Schecter and ESP/LTD Guitars, Genz Benz Cabinet and Crate Amps, plus various effect pedals.

Do you think there is someone or a person or a band that influenced you that much? That changed your way of life? That changed to think and act about your life?

Iron Maiden, Mozart, DIO, & Morbid Angel, they all have had profound effects on my life.

How about in your spare time? Do you drink alcohol or beers? If so, what are your favorite intoxicating drinks? Who in the band who loves getting drunk? And how about drugs?

AS a band we enjoy any substances we desire that fulfill ourselves.

By the way, are you married? Single? If you’re still single, would you prefer a metal chick? Besides your band and label, are you working professionally?

I am involved but not married at this moment, and yes I work a full time job as an exterminator.

Speaking to your label, I guess, most of you in the band runs the Paragon Records right? Could you pls. tell us some short history of the label? When and how did it all started?

I have noticed that Paragon Records releases are more on death/black music, is the label strictly for death/black metal only? Is it possible for you to release some thrash and power metal stuff? And how about Goth?

With Paragon, we will release any band we feel strongly about- regardless of style. As long as it is a band we feel that we can get behind.

Is your distro and label are also open for trades? Have you experienced being ripped off by any individuals, bands, labels and zines? If so, you can post all the rip off bastards here!

Yes, our distro is open to trades. Trading will always be a part of the underground way. And Yes, and as to any label/band we have been ripped off. FTFF.

For those bands who are reading right now, what do you look for a band? What will be the deal or I mean, the benefits they can get if they are signed?

Paragon records are looking for bands that look to express themselves honestly without thought to trends. The benefits to signing on to a label are that we support the bands to the best of our ability and we allow them to write the music that they want without trying to mold them.

Alright, lets go down to other topic, someone told me that the underground scene in the US are dead, because lots of gigs happening there are more on profitable, and the d.i.y ethics are gone. What can you say about the underground metal scene in the US? How about the d.i.y metal fanzines? Is there any d.i.y gig happening in your area? Would you also consider it as dead? Do you still believe in the d.i.y ethics?

Anyone who says that the scene is dead and that there is no good Metal coming out is just not paying attention. The underground ethic is not gone, because a band like Dimentianon, or a label like Paragon would not exist. So as long as bands labels like us, Red Stream, Northern Sound, and Avantgarde and bands like Destroyer666, Seekers of the Moon, Biolich, Anorexia Nervosa, and Skepticism exist the underground will never die. But Just because we are part of the underground, dosen’t mean that we can not be professional about it or that we cannot achieve some actual success. I’m personally not interested in supporting a scene based on location. I’m more interested in supporting a scene that’s not separated by lines on a map. So, I look to the scene as a whole which has many great Zines like, Convegial Hermit (Canada/US), Painful Reality (US), Ect.. As to our local scene, there are always shows going on due to really good promoters, like Michael from El Diablo Productions, setting up numerous shows. As you can tell by now, I definitely believe in the D.I.Y. ethics. I don’t have any problems with bands and/or labels achieving success- As long as they stay true to themselves.

I know you have played with a lot of big bands before, and The Forgotten/Dimentianon exist that long, would you consider your band successful? Is there something you want to achieve? Do you still wanna play in a d.i.y gig? Or do you prefer for a big production for your live set?

With Dimentianon we want to take it as far as we possibly can without losing or leaving behind where we come from. We want to be a very professional band, while keeping to our brutal/destructive/subversive expressionalism.

Black metallers always hail Satan, do you hail Satan? How much do you hail Satan? Do you consider black metalllers a poseur if they don’t hail Satan? Are you involve in any Satanic religion? Pls. tell me, just wanna know.

I will only talk for myself. Yes, I do hail Satan. He is the divine spirit which inspires all true Black Metal. But the individual must find Satan within themselves for themselves. In the manner which they concieve, not in any orthodox sense, but a personal sense. Spiritualism should be defined in the individual as a spiritual journey as in (finding/becoming) and not in a religious sense (following/worshiping).

I guess, I know you like horror movies, do you believed in ghosts, supernatural creatures, spirits etc. that you’ve seen on horrors movies? Because, you know, here in the Philippines, the old people believe in that and they have lots of stories about that.

I do believe in ghosts and spirits beyond our normal perception. But, I don’t believe in the supernatural. Just because we don’t understand something doesn’t mean that it stands outside of nature. We are all parts of nature. These are the “Gods” I perceive. Not some monotheistic Black & White bullshit that is force-fed to us to enslave and control us.

Alright, thanx a lot bro, feel free to add anything here, promote your band, projects, activities or anything, this space is all yours.

Dimentianon is currently in the process of recording our next CD entitled: “Hosannas Novus Ordo Seclorum.” Which we will then look for a label to release when we have the album finished, as we want it. Check the band out at www.dimentianon.com or check us out on myspace/ dimentianon. Also check out Paragon Records at www.paragonrecords.net. We have a distro of over 3,000 items for sale.

ONLY A FOOL SELLS HIS SOUL ONE WHO TRULY BELIEVES GIVES IT FREELY…
