Interview with Man Denied Women Delayed

Hello brothers, how are you and the rest of the band? I am just very curious, what is the story behind the name of the band “Man Denied Women Delayed”?

Pektus: Aloha! To you my friend. We’re doing fine here. Man Denied, Women Delayed is a term that we used in every scenario of gurl-boy, man-womyn relationship that goes to disillusionment and total denial of responsibilities and result. Actually we have a long story and meaning of our band’s name. The name says it all if you will figure it out.
Manny: Hi. Its ok! Feel quite satisfied especially now we got a co memorable space in your zine. Man Denied Women Delayed story is about uncertain personal condition of one livin’ in a particular patriarchal society. A macho – egoism type of personality, proudly often to counts how many had passed being used under his dominated hands but that’s really not a big deal! Coz the big deal is the word “Dignity” itself that tie up women pushing toward the stuck-up shame place.

How long did the band exist? And what about the previous band of every member? Is there any similarity of your current and previous band when it comes to your musical styles?

Pektus: We started jamming since year 2003. It all started at calamba gig. We’re into different bands at that time. Manny and Gilbert are members of The Rats and me ericsson is former Almost 7 years and Antipathy crew. Then we ask mark of the rats also to do the vox. There’s a similarity when it comes to musical taste and lyrix. We’re still in the veins of japcore type of bands and raw punk/Swedish style hc/crust.
Manny: We’re being solidarized almost two years, man denied came into existence last July 2003. We’re in different bands that time. The former bands of ericson Acyatan is Antipathy and almost seven years-are those who have a bit similarity in what of what type of music we do currently play. Our front man Mark Monserrat is the former bassist of the band called The Rats was playing a punkcore type, while the drummer Gilbert Llamado is more on metal core. About me, I am also a member of noisecore band Master Titan.

When did you discover punk? Some says punk music is some kind of worthless, do you think punk music change your way of life?

Pektus: I didn’t discover punk. Punk discovers me a lot, us in the u-ground world. Yeah, it changes me a lot in terms of my lifestyle and point of views. Thru positivism and mind political elevation.
Manny: it’s just a prejudice comes from misjudge mental mind who have really no clear idea what punk is…what does it mean?! Their music, their point of view, their noise?! As my personal definition to discover punk is to discover life! But it’s only for those who know what are they doing and why they do so! In my part it’s not a music alone who evolves my way of living coz there’s a lot of activities, resistance, ideology, and principles I full heartedly embrace, so I can say I didn’t discover punk rather I discovered my life through the principles of it’s existence nor punk didn’t change me but develop me instead.

For the readers sake, pls. Tell us what the Lucena u.g scene looks like? Is the scene there united? Is there any unity of anarcho/punx and hardcore in your area, what are those kind of attitude that you see, observed and witnessed?

Pektus: Lucena scene is very healthy, growing and united. As I observed but some bad elements is destroying our scene as a whole with those gossip mongers, criticizers and narrow-minded-politically correct minded, bogus pride people. You know who I’m pointing out. It is just a distress, disease in our struggling yet undying scene.

You’ve been together for almost two years as a band, I guess… why until now you haven’t released any demo? Are you the kind of band that prefer a decent stuff like a pro pressed released or something like that? Pls. Explain why?

Pektus: Yep, the reason why is our time availability and the financial status. Actually we have recorded our songs in d.i.y cassette tape recorder and some local gig videos. We’re planning to edit it with master titan videos and built-in-mic lined rehearsal record. We prefer purely diy effort even if it is Lo-fi or good quality recording with those tracks needed. We don’t have access for the meantime but soon. Maybe in the end of this summer. We’ll be releasing our 1st awaited demo of our time…Hehehe…
Manny: Due to financial constrained conflict schedule. Our plan to record our stuff is still impeded. But hopefully, later rather than sooner we’ll have a d.i.y released demo, so just check it out.

Your music deals politically, you know, for me, political lyrics has nothing to do if you don’t practice it in real life…Could you pls. Tell us what are those political activities you are involved for?

Pektus: Yeah, you’re right! Action speaks louder than your thoughts and voice. We’re involved in different actions, protest here with some comrades from different collectives, orgs. Like food not Bombs, Anti-Sexist Action, Earth First!, Animal Liberation comprising with Alarma Kolektiva’s activities. We’re also having seminar/workshops in every campaign like buy nothing day-against consumerism, ecological resistance, women’s issues and the rest…
Manny: One political activity here in Lucena where we’ve been involved in is FOOD NOT BOMBS, a mass feeding project that takes place mostly every Sunday. Effort and passion by the rest individual of A.LARMA.A KOLEKTIV.A

Do you think the activities you are involved in can change our fucked up system? What do you think the first thing we should focus for? Politically or economically? And why?

Pektus: We should focus first ourselves in this fucked up daily life. We should stand and determine what would be our paths to be and then comes our political inclination and motivation.
Manny: No! Not exactly the system but the norms itself “possession deserve only for the real owner. ”lets grind it! Ignore all kind of limitation and give a firm focus not only on a certain issue or problem but as wide and radical as you could be. Coz I personally believe the whole is more than the sum of its part. Save your life by saving all kind of being. This project [FNB] patiently opposed the norms standard and system of institutionalized environment and through it we’re starting to take the first step.

There are still lots of people don’t know what is really an “Anarchism”, could you pls. Tell the whole world about your views in that, since you are also practicing it?

Pektus: Whoa…Anarchism…Well, it’s just a matter of putting ourselves into simple yet peaceful living thru the positive outlook of a better community with solidarity and understanding mutually and voluntarily within your “subordinates” and fulfilling the dreams of victory towards freeing yourself with full participation and cooperation as a whole process of world stability and solemnity. A whole new world-nation in order. Choices within your hearts and prevailed equality of mankind. (Dramarama ba ang statement?)
Manny: Different definition coined by different people, it’s up to you if how you defined it as how you apply it! Accordingly to my own understanding, Anarchy means a life without external governing power above. Above your life specially no words inferiority and superiority. You couldn’t be controlled nor you could control others, it’s about life! Life with total freedom not merely peace.

It is also obvious that you are against sexism, what can you say about those people who can’t accept the fact that women are equal to men? Pls. Tell us your views and thoughts about sexism so that people may find offensive.

Pektus: With regards to womyn issues, we should eliminate and fight the macho-cultured society that we are having right now. Male domination and degradation should stop. Respect and equality –Egalitarian as we connotes. Because sexist is anti-freedom. So, free yourself. Loosen up and tighten your mind-boggling yugballs.
Manny: It’s a matter of broad mind how you could take and make clean – clear intention not a broad macho boy. It’s about emotional fitness how strong you could get along with her/them without losing respect not physically strong. It’s about clean life and fragrant humanity not merely a decent nor formal personality nor clean physical appearance. So stop macho egoistic behavior because it’s not about how you act as a mankind not a man.

Our country is over populated, how about your views about abortion? What can you say about the Catholic Church who are against in any contraceptives? Pls. Tell us your views in that, and why?

Pektus: We’re pro-choice and we riot also. It’s about the decision to be made. Be tough as you want it to be. We can’t do anything about the Catholic Church views and stand on it But at least education and seminar/workshop could add on clearing their views and thoughts about abortion-A choice for everyone.

And what about pornography thing, I know you are against into it, what can you say about those band who are into porn grind that deals with pornography? …Don’t you ever watch porno film? How about if you don’t have a wife/girlfriend and of cors masturbation is the alternative way, what about if you are imagining a naked woman in your neighborhood while masturbating, is that also some kind of a Pro Porno act? Or is this also some kind of no respect for women?

Pektus: It’s their choice of music. But generally speaking they’re nothing but a hornysake people. I’m a hypocrite if I will lie to you about watching porno films. Masturbation is not an act of sexism likewise to pornography. It depends on people’s acts and their dried controlling minds. It will add a little percentage or more if your acts are kind of out of this world IMAGINATION. There’s a lot of way in earning respect and pornography thing is a wide controversial thing to everyone. A mind consumerism with loose commercialism.

You know, I salute you guys with your activities about FOOD NOT BOMBS that you are doing every Sunday and sometimes 3 times a week in you area at Lucena, pls. Tell all my readers who still don’t know what is FOOD NOT BOMBS is all about? And pls. Tell all my fucking readers worldwide about inspiring words about FOOD NOT BOMBS so that they will also start in their backyard or in their neighborhood.

Inspiring words….We believe that Poverty is Injustice. We should fight world hunger by means of giving food rather free food for all. At least we can lessen up mass starvation and decline our nation in poverty period.

You guys also practicing veganism, what are those kind of literature that inspires you in doing it? Are you also indulging people to do it? Like PETA flyers that you are distributing on gigs, they are spreading the flyers about “NO FISHING”, do you think it will work on our country? Because fishing is their only alternative way to survive for living for people in the lower class area who live near by the sea. Do you give/send the flyers to the fisherman about “No Fishing”? What can you say about that, pls. Tell us your opinion, I need to know.

Pektus: We are not forcing/ teaching anyone to do it or be like us. Liberation is the best term for that. It’s just a matter of disseminating information and education for everyone. We are inspired because we are in the middle of nowhere but here scenario thing. It’s just for the world, for the animal and for the punk ethic and me contribution thing.
It’s just a matter of survival. They’re striving with or without boundaries. We’re in the 3rd world shithole right and we can’t do anything about it. Stop fishing-No fishing thing etc…At least in littlest way statements, flyers make clear views and awareness. It could add at least step by step process.

And I know you guys don’t smoke and drink, do you consider yourself as SxE? What is wrong in drinking alcohol if you just drink once a week? ‘cuz you know our body needs alcohol, right?

Pektus: We’re into clean living thing. We used to drink d.i.y self homebrew wine like lambanog and tuba occasionally. Organic think-tank as we prefer. It’s just we’re not used to be alcoholic even our body needs it. For me, I have my health consciousness in reasoning. It’s just a matter of choice and respect is what we need. Consume-die-and you’re nothing!

You guys are also into Hitch Hiking, is hitch hiking also part of an anarchistic act? Or a crusty/punk act? Because mostly people I know who did this are crusty people, pls tell us about hitch hiking and what is good about hitch hiking? Is hitch hiking part of a protest or propaganda and stuff like that?

Pektus: In my opinion, it is a part also. It adds a big role and factor in our movement. We could say lifestyle or just simply the way of life to sum up but in general it’s kind of a struggle and has an inclination in our political status today.
For me, it’s a cool thing to do having an alternative and counter-culture thing when you’re into traveling and nature trekking. It is an insisting public demand to do hitch hiking. Be reasonable and practicality must remain. We are doing a docu travel journal about basic hitchhiking 101- Kind of lousy but full of interesting and adventure stories.

You are also involved in writing a political fanzine called HOAX CONFLICT, who are in the band are involve in it? And as a medium that observe, what can you say about the zine scene in your area? The Quezon Province in general?…and what inspires you in writing a zine?

Pektus: Yes, I’m also contributing articles and also part of Hoax Conflict zine. It is a collective effort done mainly by Alarma Kolektiva-includes Master Titan, False, Man Denied and Zaballero El Komunidad resistance, red-v and Pantoc panx.
As for now there are only 2 active zine- namely Hoax Conflict and Radical Primates. There are only few individuals who are interested in doing zines but as I’ve heard there are some zines who are republishing their issues like Riot Tangengots zine, Alarma News etc…So read out for it.
We are inspired by the so called Counter Culture/diy punk community-its ideas and provoking agendas. Its wide involvement and reformation. A part of self-realization and our status quo as a whole.
