THE CABOOKIES
Interviewed by: FondaThis sisters from Fontana, California will make you wish that you may see them perform live! very impressing I must say since they are VERY young and already knows how to rock and not go pop. Their main influence is their father who is also the manager, and I also decided to ask him some questions.
BAND MEMBERS:
Kathy – singer / guitar, 16
Kimberly – drummer, 12
Kristine – bassist, 11
Hellish greetings to your band! So what’s up lately with you girls? Fully- booked sched I suppose?
Yes, even fortunate enough to be constantly getting booked. Each gig opens up a new one it keeps us busy
That’s great! By the way, who decided to name you band? Is it your surname?
It is not our surname. I, Kathy the guitar player had a school project to come up with a name for my teachers pet. So I came up with Cabookie. It’s a Japanese word meaning song/dance and skill. Originally spelled Kabuki, but we spell it differently.
Yeah, now I check your myspace and then read that you put the meaning of your band name ( stupid me ). I do know the word Kabuki but never thought you got it from that. I still can’t believe that your ages are 11, 12 and 16! So HOW YOUNG were you when you 1st held your instruments? Can you play other instruments besides your designated ones?
Kathy(guitar player/singer) started at 14, Kimberly(Drummer) started at 10 Kristine(bassist) started at 9. Kathy played piano. Kimberly played flute. Kristine played a little bit of piano.
I wish I started at a very young age like you girls. When you were a bit younger before, you did went to your dads’ gig. Did you look-up at him and told yourself “ Damn, I want to be in a band like my dad!”
Actually, We weren’t born yet. Our dad stopped doing all that when he settled down with our mother and decided to have us. We did get to see video tapes of them. We also got to go with him every now and then to visit his old guitar player and they jammed.
Give us at least 10 bands that you are listening to lately. Greenday
A thorn for every heart
Panic at the Disco
The Cure
Atreyu
Fallout Boy
The Go-go’s
Senses Fail
AFI
My Chemical Romance
When The Cabookies was formed, did you started covering songs or went straight in making a compo?
We started off with a cover. Then we started making our own songs from there.
I have just check your covered songs in the site you gave, well done. So how’s school? Did it boost your popularity? Has anyone started to hang-out with you just because of the attention you get as a band?
Kathy: Yes, it did. Lots of people go to our gigs and people I don’t know, know me.
Kimberly: Yes, it sure did. A little bit of jealousy here and there, but mostly fans everywhere.
Kristine: Yes it did, people at my school think its cool, and always ask for demos.
Well, I guess better get used to it, but be careful with fraud friends! When you girls have a sibling feud, does it affect your performance? Or do you set that aside during gigs but later on, the cat fights starts at home? Who ends up getting beaten? =(
No, it never affects our performance. It does affect our band practice. When our dad sees we aren’t practicing and fighting he pulls the plug.
Ouch, he sure shows you who’s the boss! Oh, I totally prefer a DIY demo, I love your live recording. But, what if a talent scout from a big music company offers your band a contract, will you accept it? If one of your conditions is to go pop like… uhh THE HANSONS? ( they will pay you big time! )
We would definitely have to think hard on that one. I guess whatever it takes to get your foot through the door. Make enough money to start recording your own music and making your own labels the way you want.
Speaking of that, what category of music do you think your band falls into? Its very difficult to categorize it. We would like it to be considered punk rock.
How about during special occasions like your birthday for example. Do you wish for a doll or make-up stuffs? Or instruments and gadgets is all it takes as a gift?
We wish for accessories, for our band equipment. We don’t go to Toys R Us, we beg our dad to take us to Guitar Center.
A true musician you truly are! How about when you get grounded, does it include not playing a show? Or will your dad set that aside but will be effective once again when you get home?
Our dad does not punish us when it comes to our band. He will punish us by taking something else away like our Xbox Ps2 or the internet. He believes that, taking away our shows or band practice is like taking away our studies to be a musician, it’s like studying to be a doctor, would you punish your child by taking away their studies?
THE FOLLOWING Qs IS FOR YOUR DAD ( I will just refer to him as Sir )
Sir, I guess you are not surprised that your kids followed in your foot-steps! What music does your band used to play before? What’s the name of your band? Any demo or EP release?
We played Rock/Punk rock, the name of our band was THE Fu-Fu’s. No, I’m sure I can dig one up though if I really needed too.
Very interesting. So since you are their band manager as well, are you picky when it comes to gig invites?
Not at all, we welcome all gigs. We thought a young age band would be an advantage, we found that many venues would like to have us. Even booked us, but once they learned of their age, we were told they couldn’t perform, because alcohol is being served in the building. They’ve played at many venues that have served alcohol though. Some places allow it some places don’t
I totally forgot that there’s an age limit in other bars. If your daughters have failing grades, does that include getting grounded?
None of them have gotten any failing grades, but if they did they wouldn’t get punished at all, they would have to work harder in their studies, discouraging music is not an option, never has been never will be.
Lucky kids, my parents are a pain! But would you mind if the time comes that these girls will get a tattoos, piercing, and wild hair color?
I myself have a few tattoos. I want to make sure, when they make these decisions that they fully know what they are doing. So that when they get older and look back, they cannot say “I was too young, why did you allow me to do this?”
I agree with you. What are the limitations that you apply to them? Like no smoking and drinking until 18? How about dating, is it a NO-NO answer still?
Yes those are all NO-NO’s.
Sorry girls, still a NO-NO! Is there a possibility that The Cabookies will drop by Asia? How about Philippines?
We would love to tour Asia, and the Philippines. I love Filipino food. I love lumpias and Pancit.
Surely I will cook that food for you if our paths will cross! Thanx for the time in answering this! We fully support bands on the UG scene. Any last messages?
