PATHOGEN
Interview by: CorixNO BULLSHIT [CORIX]: HAILS! My brothers, how’s life been treating you?
PATHOGEN [ERWIN]: Hail to you Corix! We’re fine, how bout you?- [I am doing good, man!--corix]
PATHOGEN [WILLIE]: Rough as Hell! As it has always been. Life sucks, you know. But heavy metal makes it worth living. That’s for damn sure!
NB: What takes you too long to release a follow up demo? It was I guess 3 years past since the released of “Invoking Disease” demo, right?
Erwin: yeah, you’re right, well, that time we are hurrying to release some demo even we’re not prepared yet.
Willie: we’ve had personnel troubles, especially with drummers and bass players! But we now had a more solid rhythm section with Vic of [Negatron] now on drums. A lot of different reasons delayed the release of our new demo, Erwin went back and finished his college degree, Erikk went also back to school, our original bassist Alex Alfonso got married, Vic and I were busy with Negatron and all that shit, we finally got some time to work on our music last year, so we headed on to the studio and came up with our new demo.
NB: Are you looking for labels to release your materials and to carry promotion and the cd packaging? Or you just want it by your own selves?
Erwin: yes, we are looking for some label to release our stuff, hope some labels hears our scream of death.
Willie: it would be cool if some foreign independent label would help us record our full length LP, we’re going to shop this demo to some labels and see what would turn out. In the meantime, we’re doing okay promoting and distributing it ourselves. The same goes for Negatrone demo.
NB: By the way, how did you guys formed? Since Willie is from Negatron? Is Pathogen a full time band?
Erwin: if I remember about February or March, I came to visit our friend's rehearsal studio when I meet Allan, Alex and Willie jammed some Sepultura stuff. Alex ask me “Jam with us” and that’s it! Well, ask more Willie for that
Willie: to be perfectly honest, no we are not a full time band. Not yet anyway, I formed Pathogen as a side project when I’m not too busy with my other musical endeavors. We were formed around 3 years ago, I always wanted to create that kind of horrendously sick noise that bands like Autopsy, Pungent Stench, Incantation, Impetigo, Sarcofago, and Dismember [among others] we’re making. Those are the bands that got me more into extreme musick.
NB: I never heard any metal band from Laguna except Pathogen and Negatron, what can you say about the metal scene in your area? Could you pls. Tell me some short scene report?
Erwin: all I can say, we don’t have any metal scene in our area, I think, those fuckin’ emos, punk and hardcore had their own scene.
Willie: Laguna?? Fuck Laguna! Everyone nowadays thinks it’s the emo capital of the country. There’s no metal scene here. There are few who’s really into metal. There’s only Pathogen and Negatron that plays true metal music in our city, also Morloch, they’re still around somewhat. The punk/hardcore scene here is more active, with bands like Village Idiots etc. there are some good bands from Laguna that we like, A.D.A, for example, the rest are trendy emo crap, Maybe we should form an emo band and call it “AMBOT SA EMO” hahaha! [good funny idea! Hahaha!—corix]
NB: How about the whole Philippine metal scene? What can you say? Is our scene goin’ real big? United? Or just still shit as fuck?
Erwin: the whole Philippines? I think much bigger than the past few years, about the unity? Well some bands they don’t want to participate and I don’t know the reason.
Willie: well, I guess its doing ok, there’s still some showbiz attitude permeating though. It’s not really that big, but it’s better than the other countries like Vietnam, China Hongkong etc.
NB: What is really the goal of Pathogen? Why you exist in the scene?
Erwin: our goal? To sell more of our demo, have an album or a label
Willie: there’s really no ulterior motive. We just wanna play and create music that wed like to listen to, we’re big music collectors, we like to make music that wed put on our record shelves. We existed and got formed in the city where there’s no real metal scene. I really don’t care too much about the scene. We just wanna do whatever the fuck we want!
NB: About your new demo “Into the subconscious void” how could you differenciate the old demo to the new one?
Erwin: the new one much more preferable than the old one, even the sound quality are good.
Willie: well, the songs were so much more better, when I listen to the first demo, it really sucks, now compared to this, I guess, we’ve grown more as musicians and as people. It’s so much more developed and more diverse musically and lyrically.
NB; Being metal heads, what are the things that you guys really enjoyed these days? Do you always watch horror movies? Porn videos? Reading black books or shit like that? Pls. Share.
Erwin: I like horror movies, porn? Yes, I like those shits.
Willie: I enjoy fucking women and getting drunk but not that much. None of us were into drugs nowadays. Except for maybe Erikk, he still smokes vast quantities of weed. We love all those weird porn movies shit eating and piss drinking. Erikk would like to fuck a dog! Gutten appetit!
NB: How about drinking alcohol or beer? Who among the band who love getting wasted? And how about smoking weed? Is there any of the band who still dig the old school drug habit like “drop or cough syrup”? hehe! I still dig that shit sometimes.
Erwin: only beer and cigarettes
Willie: well, we all love to drink but not that much. It’s been actually 2 ½ years since we all got drunk to the point of near consciousness. I never did any drugs. I think Erwin tried of that stuff [narcotics] before. But we’re all clean nowadays as far as I know.
NB; You guys still dig the old school ethics of a kick ass snail mail, because you don’t have a website or email address, why? Do you think the internet could affect and destroy the underground thing?
Erwin: I think it will not affect, it’s much easier to communicate people using that.
Willie: I don’t know maybe because snail mail is so much more appealing to me. I don’t have any against the internet, though. It’s just that, this e-mail thing seems a bit cold and impersonal for me, besides, its way cooler when you received a hand written letter from another part of the world.
NB: What can you say about those bands who have websites, and zines who are now online? Do you think bands and zines who are on the net are symptoms of going to be mainstream? What’s your opinion on that?
Erwin: all I can say, I respect what they are doing to make easier and cheaper.
Willie: it depends on how you use the internet. But then again, the internet still doesn’t have the mass market appeal of giant media machineries such telivision and radio. Maybe 10 to 15 more years, the internet would be available in every household . I’ve nothing against bands using the internet as a medium of promoting themselves…to each his own.
NB: I know you are also writing zine called “Dead Rekoning” what’s up with the zine? How many issues been out so far?
Erwin: now, I cant contribute at Dead Reckoning zine coz I’m too busy with my business.
Willie: yes, that is correct. We’ve had two issue out so far. We started the zine couple of years back. The third issue is already underway, but there’s no definite release date yet. We’re still waiting for the response of other bands we interviewed, plus, I have two bands which take up most of my time and finances, so things are little strained but we manage to get by somewhat.
NB: Lets bring the topic to the other side, in my native province in Surigao, somewhere in Mindanao, mostly people there believed in supernatural creatures like the “Aswang”, when we migrated Cavite, I heard the same shits of Aswang stuffs, I know it’s also the same shits in your province too, since your band plays death metal and mostly talks the topic about the supernatural lyricly, do you believe in that kind of creature?
Erwin: I don’t know! If I saw in my own eye, I’ll believe it, all I can say is, I want to see some fuckin’ creatures that you’re saying.
Willie: if there’s ever an “ASWANG” it’s ex-EFFLUVIUM’s drummer [Reynaldo] girlfriend! Hahaha! She’s ugly as horny toad. But yeah, there’s plenty of people here who believe the myth. I for one has never seen such a thing. People here says mount Banahaw is full of supernatural stuff. I’ve been there several times but I didn’t see anything like that. I’ve seen some strange shit of what appears to be U.F.O’s there.
NB: Alright, we all know that we are living in a fucked up country and fucked up system, if opportunity comes to you to migrate abroad, would you leave Philippines? What country you like, anyway?
Erwin: if I had an opportunity to leave the country, why not! For the sake of my family, and I will chose Europe or Japan for that.
Willie: you’re so damn right! Everything in this pathetic country is totally screwed. Well almost everything. I still like this country as a place. The people living in here and managing the country as fools! I guess, there’s no place like home, I still love the Philippines. But if I ever got a chance to migrate elsewhere, I’d chose the U.S because at least I have a lot of friends there. Vic would like to migrate to Mars [Vic wants to be an alien someday, hehe!—corix]
NB: Before we end up, honestly, Do you hail Satan or God? Why?
Erwin: I don’t hail Satan nor to God.
Willie: my mind is not for rent to any God or government.
NB: Thanx for answering my shits bro, this space is all yours, say whatever you wanna say.
Erwin: thanks again, hope you enjoy our stuff, to all metal heads out there, contact us to have a copies of our demo in very reasonable price.
Willie: thanx for the true u.g support Corix. Everyone get in touch. Any chicks who want free anal sex contact Erwin. Shit eating rules!!!
